Descripció de l'itinerari
Physical difficulty: 2/5
Note: Despite the name, there are actually more than 5 huts on this trail. Some are also missable and may require a detour to visit. For example, we missed the Austriahütte, which is also home to the Dachstein region museum, because the trail passes near it but doesn't actually lead through it.

The "5 Huts Trail," also known as "The Classic," is a popular hiking trail in the Dachstein region. This easy, family-friendly hike takes you through stunning alpine landscapes beneath the Dachstein massif.
The trail is suitable for all ages and skill levels, and no special equipment is required. By mid-June, the trail is typically clear of snow. However, be sure to bring sun protection, as most of the trail is unshaded. Food and drinks are available at the various huts along the way, so you can refuel and recharge as needed.
One of the best things about the 5 Huts Trail is its flexibility. With multiple trailheads to choose from, you can customize your route to suit your interests and abilities. You can also shorten or extend the hike as you see fit, depending on your energy levels and the time of day.
If you're interested in visiting the Südwandhütte (1910m) directly, you can drive to the Dachstein Glacier cable car parking area, which is also home to shops and restaurants. Keep in mind that a 20€ toll applies for road use and parking, unless you plan to visit the glacier itself. Alternatively, you can park in the northern Schildlehen district (near Alpengasthaus Edelbrunn) for 4€/day, although be aware that the parking area is unpaved and the machine only accepts coins.
When we hiked the trail, we decided to extend our route by looping around the Schönbühel promontory from Südwandhütte. Instead of heading directly south, we went northeast and enjoyed the added scenery and adventure. This detour is definitely worth considering if you have the time and energy.
Overall, the 5 Huts Trail is a must-do hike for anyone visiting the Dachstein region.
Punts d'interès

Car park (near Alpengasthaus Edelbrunn)
The parking on the side of the road is unpaved, paid (4€/day - only option; coin-operated machine only). There's no free parking.

Intersection #1 / go right / to '5 Huttenweg'
Generally, follow the signposts marked "5 Huttenweg"; that's the "5 Huts Trail".

The Brandalm Hut, with Austriahütte perched on the hill above it.
Intersection #2 / go left

Dachstein Glacier - parking lot and cable car station
As you approach the parking lot (a few kilometers before), you'll pass through a toll booth where you'll collect a toll slip. If you plan to visit the Glacier, you can purchase a ticket and have it validated at the station, which will waive the toll fee. However, if you don't intend to visit the Glacier, be aware that you'll need to pay a 20€ toll when you exit the area.

Südwandhütte
Located at 1910m, this is the crown jewel of the hike. The "main" hut, so to speak. Situated in the foot of the Dachstein peaks, it gives an impressive view of the towns and valley below, and the surrounding mountains, as well as offering a souvenir shop, food, refreshments, and toilets.

Intersection #7 / go left / to 'Glochlam / Bachlalm'
Continue going left and down.

Intersection #10 / go right (over the bridge)
Follow the bend in the road leading right, or shortcut it and go over the small bridge.
