Dear Tourist: Be welcome to the TREN PATAGONICO Official guide. This is the world famous transcontinental train to SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE. A BRIEF OF HISTORY The FERRO CARRIL PATAGONICO was ordered by Law 5559 in 1908. Construction started at San Antonio Oeste, exactly at the old Port, were is the half loop. The line was concluded in 1934, and since that day and until 1993, the Lakes of The South was the main train in that route. In the '40's, President Perón placed the Hungarian Ganz "Huemul" fast train in the line. This advanced train was replaced by the mitical "Arrayanes" in the '60's. One of the Arrayanes innovation was a Cinema coach, and later a Disco. In 1993, President Menem ordered closure of all Argentine railways and that was a death sentence for all trains in Argentina. It is known as the RAILCYDE. In 1994, the Rio Negro Province Goverment, in attention to intensive tourists pressure created a new railway company named TREN PATAGONICO. The famous train to Bariloche were recovered, but renamed using the Railway name Company, TREN PATAGONICO. Today is a very succesfull and required touristic attractive, and consequently is difficult to find place in the conveyor. So reservations must be made in advance. About this, please, ASK YOUR TRAVEL AGENT. THE ROUTE The train crosses the South American continent from East to West, from the Atlantic Ocean to the heart of the Andes mountains. The scenery in this part is 95% steppe, and a 5% of forest. The route is divided in 3 parts: ¤ The Ocean Flat. ¤ The Steppe. ¤ The Mountains. So you are going to see 3 Tren Patagónico guides. One per stretch. In the Ocean Flat the train runs 200km following the Atlantic coast, but far from it. In fact the sea only can be seen in two moments. One at Vintter station, placed 30km from the coast, but 100m over the sea level. Here the sea can be seen as a nice blue extension, by contrast with the yellow desert. The other point is the San Antonio Bay, which is, in fact, a very curious place. It is a desert invaded by the sea. Sea tides have near 8 meters of diference. That large amplitude makes the sea flood the entire bay during the high tide, while the bay remains dry at the low tide. The rest of the route is desert. Also here you are going to see true Ghost Stations, and one Ghost town. Some of this stations are used as poles for trekking enthusiasts or by cicletourists who come along the VIA PATAGONENSIS. The East Section of the Vía Patagonensis is a 200km long cycletourism route connecting Viedma with San Antonio Oeste. Half of that route runs on the coast, and half runs at the track side. Notice that these places are very lonely. Perhaps, and with luck you are going to see ñandúes and guanacos running alongside the train. This is the World and the scenery of this Stretch 1.
